Mr. Andrew H. Tu Memorial Scholarship

Mr. Andrew Hsueh-kwei Tu(1921-2001) moved from his native Inner Mongolia to Hong Kong and dedicated his whole life to public education. In 1954, he co-founded Mu Kuang English School with Mrs. Elsie Tu and became its principal. Public service was his life-long avocation. He founded the Samarittan Befrienders Hong Kong in 1960 and was its president. He was also president of the Association for the Promotion of Public Justice among others.

Mr. Tu went through the baptism of fire of the War of Resistance. He walked for hundreds of miles to reach as far as Chongqing. Angered by the repeated attempts by the Japanese right wing's denial of aggression against China and its evasion of war responsibility, he founded the Chinese Alliance for Commeration of the Sino-Japanese War Victims in Hong Kong in 1988 and became its president; subsequently, he co-founded the Global Alliance for Preserving the History of WW II in Asia and became its first president. To commemorate the tens of millions of victims of the War of Resistance, to urge Japan to own up to all its war crimes and responsibilities and to make sure the succeeding generations never forget this bloody page of historical facts, he worked selflessly years in and years out never letting up his effort. Sadly, he passed away in Hong Kong in 2001. His publications include:

  • We Want Justice(Chinese)(Science and Education Publication, Hong Kong, 1999);
  • Expectation in Learning and Teaching(Chinese)(Science and Education Publication, Hong Kong, 2000);
  • The School History of Mu Kuang(Chinese) (Mu Kuang English School, 2001);
  • Camel Bells in the Windy Desert (Longman Group, 1987);
  • Shouting on the Mountain (Chemeleon Press, 2004) and others.

In addition, the manuscript of his oral interview is in custody of the Society.

In commemoration of Mr. Tu and carry on his will, the Society hereby established this Memorial Scholarship. Details related to it will be announced soon.
