october 26 year 2010 marks the first anniversary of the passing away of prof. t. k. tong, the founder of oral history society on modern china. a gathering, organized by the society, is to be held on november 13 (saturday) 10 o'clock in the morning at the c.v. starr east asian library, columbia university, new york in memory of prof. tong. the choice of the library for the gathering is particularly meaningful because prof. tong had been head of the chinese section of the library for many years in the 1960's.

a number of close friends and associates of prof. tong have been invited to speak. dr. chengzhi wang, head of the chinese section of the c.v. starr east asian library, will give a special report on prof. tong's contribution to the library and the library's current status.

the society also takes the occasion to introduce a new book, entitled t. k. tong and oral history, published by the society. the book is a collection of articles which can be divided in four groups:

• an oral history of prof. tong on his life as a graduate student at columbia university
• descriptions of prof. tong from his friends and associates
• oral history of participants from ww ii and taiwan during the white terror period
• essays from the winners of a contest for oral history open to college students in china with the society as the sponsor

included in the book are also many valuable historical pictures.
